Sure, puppies are pretty adorable, with their soft fur, big paws, and wriggly bodies.
But often, older dogs who have just has much love and cuddles to give are overlooked in shelters because people are partial to puppies.
Senior dogs are so special, like this senior surrogate mom, and though they may need a little extra love because of potential health problems, they are usually sweet, docile, and excited to lounge in your lap.
This is what Los Angeles resident Julie Docherty realized after she adopted her first senior dog, the adorable, one-eyed Sir MoMo.
Since then she has adopted many more older dogs, all chihuahuas with the same type of aging doggie ailments.
The four furry friends couldn’t be cuter and help prove that senior pooches can make just has amazing (and photogenic) pets.

L.A. resident Julie Docherty has quite a collection of dogs.
She has four adorable little chihuahuas, all of whom are spritely little senior citizens!
Her love for elderly pups began 5 years ago when she adopted the sweet 11-year-old Sir MoMo.
Though she had to tend to his failing senses and an eye operation, she swore by his sweet soul and kind disposition.
Her time spent with Sir MoMo made her realize how special little senior dogs are and how overlooked they are in shelters.
“I came to realize then how heartbreakingly overlooked this large category of shelter dogs are, and how ideal senior adoption was for me,” she explained to The Dodo.
Since then she has adopted many other elderly chihuahuas—four more to be exact!
And most of them are from Tiny Loving Canines, a rescue center in California that specializes in small breeds.
The little family includes Choli Churro, Paloma Linda, and Benito, along with Sir MoMo.
There used to be a fifth, but the elderly Lalo Flan passed on due to cancer.
Like Sir MoMo, they all have a range of older dog health problems including arthritis, dental difficulties, and heart problems.
But that definitely doesn’t make them any less lovable—or photogenic!
The four definitely carry on like a family, each with their own little quirks.
“Paloma and Benito are the closest. Mo tends to like his space. Choli will invite himself flop next to anyone. He especially enjoys tormenting Benito,” Docherty explained to the Huffington Post.
Despite all of their little quirks, there are certain advantages that come with having older canines.
They are more subdued; not barking, biting, and rapid energy that comes along with caring for a puppy.
They are also making a name for themselves on social media—understandably when you look at those amazing faces.
Their Instagram page @jemandthemisfits documents the four silly seniors and their antics all around the house.
Though the golden year chihuahuas need a little more care, they are just as sweet and loving as their younger counterparts—all senior dogs are!
So if you’re considering adopting a dog, don’t immediately opt out of an older one; they could end up being the perfect furry companion.
