Abigail, a sweet Pit Bull mix, had an incredibly abusive start to her life. She had been used as a bait dog and had been so disfigured that it was painful to even look at her. She even had her right ear torn right off.
Even after facing such abuse and trauma, Abigail never lost her capacity to love. And she found love for the first time when Victoria Frazier of Love is Fur Ever, a Ft. Meyers-based dog rescue, spotted her picture at a Miami dog shelter.
She had been picked up as a stray and brought to the Miami shelter. Victoria decided to pick the dog up from the shelter and foster her back at her own rescue.

She received skin grafts and underwent multiple surgeries. The vet staff named her Abigail.
As Abigail was all bandaged up, her bandages coincidentally looked like a bonnet.

So, Victoria added some accessories to complete the look.
As Abigail’s story spread and her new bonneted look went viral, hundreds of people began sending in handmade bonnets, hats, and headbands. So sweet!
Victoria even entered Abigail into the American Humane Association’s Hero Dog of the Year contest. She was one among seven finalists, who were able to raise money for a charity of their choice.
The money that Abigail managed to raise was donated to Dogs on Deployment, an organization that finds temporary homes for soldiers’ pets while they are serving.
Abigail was chosen as the Hero Dog of the Year and received her award at a star-studded gala in Beverly Hills.
The dog who was on the verge of dying only a few months ago has now become a star in her own right.
After spending seven months with Victoria, Abigail found her forever home with Jason and Megan Steinke, who also have another rescue Pit Bull. She even has her own Facebook page – Bonnets For Abigail.
What a sweet, wonderful dog who defied all odds and never forgot how to love!
